The (financial) Cost
We were told our family of 5 should be able to live on $2500/month in SA, in addition to startup costs like processing passports and visas, buying plane tickets, and getting a (*safe*) vehicle. At first I just took their word for it, but then the question was asked: “aren’t things cheaper over there?” So I began to wonder...Do we really need that much? So I read some articles by missionaries on why it costs so much. They were really helpful and I’ll put the links at the end of this post. Essentially, things are not cheaper over seas. In fact, many things are more expensive. Labor is usually cheaper. But I’ve checked out the SA version of Amazon, and most items from blenders to strollers are at least the same price as we pay in the States.
I think I’m mostly writing this post for my own sake. I’m dreading asking people for money. But I also need to remember that we are following God on this journey. Therefore, (1) He will provide, and (2) those who support us will be blessed by participating in what God is doing across the world.
